How Grades Are Calculated
How is the percentage worked out?
Percentage = correct answers ÷ total questions × 100. With 50 questions and 7 wrong, that's 43 ÷ 50 × 100 = 86%. If you set points per question, points earned and lost are shown too, but the percentage stays the same because every question is worth the same amount.
How much is each question worth?
Each question is worth 100 ÷ total questions percent. On a 50-question test every question is 2%, on a 20-question test it's 5%, and on a 35-question test it's about 2.86%. That is also exactly how much each wrong answer costs.
What letter grade is a 70%?
On the standard US scale, 70% is typically a C-. Some schools set the cutoff a little differently, so check the scale in Settings if your school uses its own grading policy.
What grade is 12 out of 15?
12 out of 15 is 80%, typically a B- on the standard scale. See every score for a 15-question test in the grading chart.
What is the grading scale for a 20-question test?
On a 20-question test, each question is worth 5%, so every wrong answer lowers the score by 5 percentage points. Use the 20 preset in the grading chart to see the full scale.
Can I grade with half points?
Yes — set points per question in the calculator and you can award or deduct half points on any item, similar to a physical grading chart. The percentage and letter grade update to match.
How does rounding affect the letter grade?
The letter grade is applied to the percentage after your rounding setting. With whole-number rounding, 89.5% becomes 90% and earns an A-; with exact rounding it stays 89.5% and earns a B+. Pick the rule that matches your grading policy in Settings.
Is student data stored anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser. Only your preferences (theme, grade scale, passing score, rounding, and recent question counts) are saved on this device. Student names and scores are never sent anywhere and are cleared when you close the tab.
